ME6502 HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER  – REGULATION – 2013

OBJECTIVES : â€¢ To understand the mechanisms of heat transfer under steady and transient conditions. â€¢ To understand the concepts of heat transfer through extended surfaces. â€¢ To learn the thermal analysis and sizing of heat exchangers and to understand the basic
concepts of mass transfer.

(Use of standard HMT data book permitted)

UNIT I CONDUCTION

General Differential equation of Heat Conductionâ€“ Cartesian and Polar Coordinates â€“ One Dimensional Steady State Heat Conduction â€“â€“ plane and Composite Systems â€“ Conduction with Internal Heat Generation â€“ Extended Surfaces â€“ Unsteady Heat Conduction â€“ Lumped Analysis â€“ Semi Infinite and Infinite Solids â€“Use of Heislerâ€™s charts.

UNIT II CONVECTION

Free and Forced Convection – Hydrodynamic and Thermal Boundary Layer. Free and Forced Convection during external flow over Plates and Cylinders and Internal flow through tubes .

UNIT III PHASE CHANGE HEAT TRANSFER AND HEAT EXCHANGERS

Nusseltâ€™s theory of condensation – Regimes of Pool boiling and Flow boiling. Correlations in boiling and condensation. Heat Exchanger Types – Overall Heat Transfer Coefficient â€“ Fouling Factors – Analysis â€“ LMTD method – NTU method.

UNIT V MASS TRANSFER

Basic Concepts â€“ Diffusion Mass Transfer â€“ Fickâ€™s Law of Diffusion â€“ Steady state Molecular Diffusion â€“ Convective Mass Transfer â€“ Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer Analogy â€“Convective Mass Transfer Correlations.

TOTAL : 45 PERIODS

OUTCOMES : â€¢ Upon completion of this course, the students can able to understand and apply different heat and mass transfer principles of different applications.
